Hello I’m Tiahna Goldbird but you can call me Ms Tea.

I’m a hoop maker, hoop lover, hoop teacher and founder of Teaki Hoops. I love everything bright and kitsch and think kindness is the king of the castle. I’m trained and certified in all manner of skills and trades, and I use them to fortify my life’s heart work- bringing play back into your day and our community.

I could a tell 26 part series on my life so far, such is my love of a good yarn, infact ‘Yarn’ is my high school nickname, but that’s another story. So here’s just ...

5 things you should know about me!

I’m very serious about play.

Yes, it’s true I’ve even been to business school!
As a trained and experienced Early Childhood Educator, I’ve studied the vast and varied seas of learning styles, personalities, pedagogy and family arrangements. I know for a fact that we all could use a little less screen and a little more play in our lives.
Play is the highest form of reasearch after all ( according to Albert Einstein) but it is also very important for well being in adults to. Besides why should children have all the fun?

I like to keep things ‘Old School” cool.

Can you tell ‘Grease’ and ‘A league of their Own’ are my all time favourite movies? As a modern feminist I like to say that I’m ‘retro styled with progressive values’. I’ve certainly caught the 1950’s hoop fever and delight in the fabulous fashions, music and dancing of bygone years when the screens were silver and lives simpler, but some ideas and behaviours are better left in the past. Ideas and rigid rules like ideal measurements, weigh ins, gender stereotypes and diminishing difference don’t serve our selves or our community of mindful movers. I take pride in making the hoop a welcoming, safe and respectful place for all folk to be in and explore movement for the mind and the body in kind.

I couldn’t hoop till I was 23!

So no I’m not some child hoop prodigy or hard core circus devotee. All the amazing things I can do with hoops I have learned in the last decade (from hoop prodigies and circus artists but that’s not the point) Like lots of people, before hooping I struggled with terrible self image, anxiety and depression. For years I loathed my body for not looking like those in the surf shop bikini adds and witnessed my peers struggle with terrible eating disorders and strange diets.
So when I picked up the first hoop I could rock, I thought FINALLY this hoop is going to help me fall in love with my body because ... hello six pack! Well it did... the practice of hooping taught me to concentrate, stick to it and celebrate what my body can do over what it looked like. I started setting fitness goals based on what hooping moves I wanted to achieve instead of what I wanted to look like in the mirror. Letting something revolve around me made notice my strong legs to balance on, my fast and furious arms that can wrangle four hoops into formations of beauty, my straight and proud posture and my newfound ability to steady my breath. Stepping into the hoop changed my body but better than that, it changed my mind about my body and it gave me permission to celebrate it at any size. So a few years ago I completed my Hooplove coach training and now I’m on a mission to share the hoop love with everyone.

I love a good audience.

I’ve performed for thousands at festivals like Rainbow Serpent VIC, hundreds at street events like Curry Fest NSW, a select few at intimate cabarets and to a just a few passing folk on Melbourne’s busking arena along south bank. It doesn’t matter much to me if you are young or old, plenty or few, my favourite place to hoop is in front of you! I’ve always been a bit of a spotlight junkie, since my early days competing with the TV in our living room and winning trophies in eisteddfods I still delight in the real world theatrics and thrill that only live performance brings.

I’m a Mamma!

After getting married and giving birth in 2017, I began to realise just how quickly life’s most precious moments come and go. Now more than ever I have a desire to connect families through the magic of play in a safe and nurturing environment.I won’t lie, managing a small business from home and being a parent can be hard to juggle, but it’s really important to me that my child sees me sharing what I’m passionate about. I want him to know that a day spent working with what you love is never a day wasted and time spent filling my cup is important. I’m on a mission to help other mums feel the benefit of letting something revolve around them!
